Get Current page’s Url. Request.Url vs SPUtility.GetPageUrlPath

SharePoint 2010: Get Current page's Url. Request.Url vs SPUtility.GetPageUrlPath

Use SharePoint's SPUtility.GetPageUrlPath

Few days back while I was working on SharePoint application page, I had needed to get the current page's url. I'm used to using Request.Url to get the current page url and used Request.Url in several places. But interestingly, when I tried to get the current page url from application page, it was giving me the root web's url (likehttp://mysharepoint/_layouts/pages/mypage.aspx) whereas my actual page's url was something like http://mysharepoint/subsite/_layouts/pages/mypage.aspx. The Request.Url was just skipping the SPWeb name.

Then I tried the SharePoint's SPUtility.GetPageUrlPath and found the actual url. Though the Request.RawUrl returns the relative url which includes the subsite name but it seems safe to use SPUtility.GetPageUrlPath method to get current page's url to make sure the page is valid and we can trust SharePoint API more in SharePoint context rather than fully relaying on asp.net built-ins.

SharePoint 2010 find error messages with a Correlation ID token

Introduction

In SharePoint 2010, you've got some new capabilities for error reporting and logs. One of the most noted features for me as a developer is that whenever you bump into an error message – you'll be presented with a correlation ID token.

In this article I will try to explain how you can fetch that token from SharePoint, and also provide a small snippet of code to be able to build your own "Log Searcher Web Part" for your administrators.

Correlation ID, what's that?

In SharePoint 2010, you get a Correlation ID (which is a GUID) attached to your logs/error messages when something happens. This ID can then be used to lookup that specific error from the logs.

This Correlation ID is used per request-session in SharePoint 2010, and if you are in the process of requesting some information from SharePoint and bump into some problems along the way – your Correlation ID will be the best starting point for searching for what went wrong along that request!

You might get an error message like this in SharePoint 2010 (don't worry, if you haven't seen one like this one yet – just hang in there, sooner or later you will..Winking smile)

Run in SharePoint 2010 Management Shell

Replace

1464bf90-83a2-4260-921e-1c44c227425c with your Correlation ID

get-splogevent | ?{$_.Correlation -eq "f08306fc-568a-476b-b732-384243204b21"}

get-splogevent | ?{$_.Correlation -eq "1464bf90-83a2-4260-921e-1c44c227425c"} | select Area, Category, Level, EventID, Message | Format-List > C:\Awesome.log

get-splogevent | ?{$_.Correlation -eq "f08306fc-568a-476b-b732-384243204b21"} | select Area, Category, Level, EventID, Message | Format-List

The web server process that was being debugged has been terminated by Internet Information Services (IIS)

"The web server process that was being debugged has been terminated by Internet Information Services (IIS). This can be avoided by configuring Application Pool ping settings in IIS. See help for further details."

Some times while debugging you get following above error. To resolve this issue do following settings in IIS

  1. Open the Administrative Tools window.
  2. Click Start and then choose Control Panel. 3.In Control Panel, choose Switch to Classic View, if necessary, and then double-click Administrative Tools.
  3. In the Administrative Tools window, double-click Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.image
  4. In the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window, expand the node.
  5. Under the node, right-click Application Pools.
  6. In the Application Pools list, right-click the name of the pool your application runs in, and then click Advanced Settings.
  7. In the Advanced Settings dialog box, locate the Process Model section and chose one of the following actions:

    *.Set Ping Enabled to False.
    —or—
*.Set Ping Maximum Response Time to a value greater than 90 seconds.

Setting Ping Enabled to False stops IIS from checking whether the worker process is still running and keeps the worker process alive until you stop your debugged process. Setting Ping Maximum Response Time to a large value allows IIS to continue monitoring the worker process.

9.Click OK.
